02 - When Life Hits You with a Change, Do You Stop the Music or Find a Way to Play On
When change disrupts your path, do you resist or adapt? In this episode of MKC - Micro Keynote Concert, discover how a career-altering moment forced a fresh perspective—and why learning to “play differently” is the key to growth in leadership, business, and life.
When Life Hits You with a Change, Do You Stop the Music or Find a Way to Play On?
Change is inevitable. Whether in business, leadership, or personal life, disruptions arrive unannounced—shaking up the melodies we’ve grown accustomed to. The question is, when that happens, do we stop playing, or do we learn to adapt?
This episode of MKC - Micro Keynote Concert explores a critical moment in my own career when I had to make that choice. It’s a story about resilience, reinvention, and the power of adaptability—lessons that apply far beyond the world of music.
The Unexpected Shift: When Familiar Melodies Fade
Imagine hearing a well-known tune like Jingle Bells—except, something’s different. It’s in a minor key. The melody you expected is still there, but it carries a different tone, a different emotion. It’s not wrong, but it’s unexpected.
Life throws us these moments all the time. You plan, you practice, you perfect—but then, suddenly, the rules change. In my case, it was my ability to play guitar the way I had for years. My style had to shift, my technique had to evolve. I could have given up. But instead, I found a new way to play.
Leadership & Business: The Art of Adaptation
This same principle applies to leadership and business. When an industry shifts, when a market changes, when a disruption occurs—some professionals resist. They hold on tightly to the old way of doing things, hoping everything will return to how it was.
But true leaders don’t just endure change—they respond to it creatively. They find new ways to deliver value, innovate, and evolve.
Consider companies that pivoted during economic downturns or professionals who transitioned into new roles after industry shifts. Those who relearn and reimagine their craft don’t just survive change—they thrive in it.
How to Keep Playing When the Tune Changes
If you find yourself facing an unexpected shift, here are three key takeaways from this episode:
1️⃣ Recognize that change doesn’t mean failure. When things don’t go as planned, it’s easy to feel defeated. But change isn’t the end—it’s an invitation to evolve.
2️⃣ Adaptation isn’t about abandoning your strengths. It’s about applying them differently. Just like I had to adjust how I played music, you can shift your approach while staying true to your core skills and values.
3️⃣ Creativity is your superpower. Whether in business, leadership, or personal development, innovation comes from those who embrace change with a creative mindset.
The Choice Is Yours: Pause or Play On?
So, when life shifts your melody, how will you respond? Will you stop playing, or will you adjust and find a new way to make the music work?

Did you recognize that little song excerpt? Maybe. Maybe not. It was Jingle Bells, well, almost, played in a minor key. And sometimes that's how life works. We expect things to sound, feel, and play out a certain way, but then change happens and a challenge shifts the melody. The question is, do we freeze? Or do we adapt?
Late into my career, I faced a moment where the way I played guitar had to change. I could have given up, but instead, I found a new way to make the music work. So when life changes your song, don't stop playing. Learn to play differently.
